Maegan's Wedding

MAEGAN IS MARRIED.

. . . . .

For those of you who don't know, Maegan works with my parents at LCMA in Mbale. She'd lived here  for more than a year and met the love of her life when she had finally stopped looking.

Maegan was the first friend I made when moving with my family to Uganda. She is literally the sister I never had. She is filled with so much wisdom and encouragement, the weakest person could come to here and leave stronger than ever before.

On April fifth, two-thousand and fourteen, I was able to be apart of an important chapter of her life: her wedding.

This is the day she becomes one with the man that God has designed specifically for her. The day that every little girl dreams of her entire life. The day that man and woman become one in Christ.

I am so joyful to say I am extremely ecstatic for my friends, Maegan & Emma, on their wedding and I pray that God blesses them more than they could ever have imagined on their journey through life together. Love you Meg!

Week 11: Completed

Hello Friends!

So, I've come to the conclusion that I really enjoy filming and taking photographs. Even though I don't have the best camera (it's merely a lousy old school nikon), I still find such excitement + joy from capturing even just the smallest everyday moments.

. . . . .

I love how photogenic people are.
I love showing the african children their adorable faces.
I love not making it about me, but about someone else.
I love that everyone smiles when they see my pull out my camera.
I love how I can take a grimy picture and make it beautiful in a shocking three minutes.

Now, I've decided that photography and filming is definitely in the future for me, God willing, of course. (Time to save up for a new camera!!)

Some of you are probably thinking, "Hm, that's funny. I haven't seen much of this superb work you speak of Katie..." Well, my friend, here is where I answer your prayers. These are some of my favorite snaps from the past few weeks. Also, at the bottom, you can find the links to my past four videos I've created! What an exciting time.

I Will Call You, Beloved

Thursday, 10 April 2014

Romans 9:25 says--
“I will call them ‘my people’ who are not my people;
and I will call her ‘my loved one’ who is not my loved one,"

Who in the world do you think you are to second-guess God? Do you for one moment suppose any of us knows enough to call God into question? Clay doesn’t talk back to the fingers that mold it, saying, “Why did you shape me like this?” Isn’t it obvious that a potter has a perfect right to shape one lump of clay into a vase for holding flowers + another into a pot for cooking beans? If God needs one style of pottery especially designed to show his angry displeasure + another style carefully crafted to show his glorious goodness, isn’t that all right? Either or both happens to Jews, but it also happens to the other people. Hosea put it well:
I’ll call nobodies + make them somebodies;
I’ll call the unloved + make them beloved.
In the place where they yelled out, “You’re nobody!”
they’re calling you “God’s living children.”

What Is Love

Wednesday, 9 April 2014

as i crouch under a shady tree, next to a futbol field on a hot and dusty day, he quickly jumps around the tree after shouting "TEN!" and we take off running.

what is love

love is feeling at home in a place you hardly know anything about
love is feeling like you've spent years with someone but you only just met them ten minutes ago
love is caring for someone else's child and forcing back the tears when it's time for them to go home
love is never wanting to miss out on a big bear hug from sixty-five dirty children
love is the way they hold tighter to your hand when you say "Nkwagala nyo", or "i love you so much"

he chases me around and around the large tree until i finally give in. as his brown hands wrap around my waist, he looks up at me and whispers in my ear "i've caught you auntie kate, and now you can never leave."

God Is Good, Even When The Ending Isn't

Thursday, 3 April 2014

a few days ago we lost a child from our program.

it's always hard to lose someone close to you, and even more if you loved them. a mother brought us her child on the verge of death and we had to take immediate action in order for this baby to make it. it's heartbreaking to know we were too late for this one.

We live in a world where innocent people suffer and good friends die and stories don’t have the endings we prayed for, and the pain and the hurt, it is everywhere. But the joy and the hope that we find in our Savior? It is everywhere, too.  I do not have all the answers; in fact, I don’t have many at all. But this is what I know: God is who He says He is. And in the hurt and the pain and the suffering, God is near, and He is good, even when the ending isn’t.

People See Him Through You

Tuesday, 25 March 2014

"I see you driving a van. There are a lot of struggles on your road, but you keep going. Why? You know you don't have to be the one driving..."

she reaches for my hand + smiles. I reach for hers and force a smile, forcing the tears back. I wait for her to speak to me, but she just sits + looks at me with eyes full of joy.

today, I am having someone I never met before speak to me with words given to her by our Father.

as I sit in a wooden chair in the crowded room surrounded by soft music + familiar faces of local missionaries in town also surrounded by unknown faces + I start to feel nervous and unsteady. Not because they made me feel that way on purpose, but because I had no idea what to expect or do in the given situation. Is this normal? Did everyone else here with me feel the same way?

suddenly, the girl with her hand on mine says, "You are SO beautiful.

those four words. those four words everyone needs to hear to encourage them. I fight the tears + force a smile. I couldn't tell you the last time someone told me that, let alone the last time I told someone else that. It was so comforting + sincere + refreshing.

"When I look at you, I see a long distance swimmer. Strong, steady, and graceful. I can already tell that you have so much strength + endurance, + God is still making you stronger every day."

How could someone I never met before, let alone from Paris, know just the right words to say to me? There are things in my life that have caused me so much sorrow + pain. Times that I thought I couldn't endure anymore. I've felt so weak + useless for many years. Always thinking I was not strong enough to be here in the first place.

as she holds me tight, she continues to speak to me words of encouragement: "I don't know how you do it, but you love everyone you meet. You go the extra mile and are so sweet and sincere, even to those who turn away from you. God loves that. People see Him through that."

how did she know so much about me, and yet i know so little about her?

after meditating on those spoken words, i realized that's it! this is how God wants me to spread His word-- through love. It comes so naturally to me + now I understand why. I am sent out to be a light in the darkness. to show Him through love.

over the past two years, I went through some hard times. I endured so much hardship + struggle that I kept to myself. but, He took it all away in a matter of eight and a half minutes. He used her, a complete stranger, to tell me exactly what I wanted to hear + He knew that it was time I let go of everything I was holding onto + gave it to Him instead.

as my arms are wrapped around someone I hardly knew, the relief swept over me in the form of tears + I had never felt so refreshed + renewed. what a holy + wonderful relief.

for those that are wondering the question, "are you okay?" the answer is a resounding "Yes." I am more in love with my Savior than I ever have been before. I pray that each + every day will be filled with my growing love for Him. He is good to us, friends, + He doesn't ever, ever leave.

This Is What Makes It Worth It

Friday, 21 March 2014

as the line of our malnutrition clinic grows, as does my love for the children and their mothers.

i know that God has brought these women + their children to us to hear His word + find His love.

we hold our clinic every monday morning. it usually lasts from 9:30am-5:00pm. we meet with a range of 40-80 women and children each time. we start off with a song of worship, then a devotion and prayer, followed by some facts about malnutrition. then, they are divided up into new women + children or ones already enrolled in our program. we then measure their amount of body-fat, take their weight, + file their basic information (sounds like fun, eh?).

even though in the end, we only provide small amounts of medicine + basic ingredients for porridge, these mothers + jjajjas are beyond grateful.

to me, this is what makes no power, no running water, only a few english-speaking friends all worth it, that gratefulness. the fact that God can use me to make someone that elated makes me forget i miss tv + normal food + having clean feet. i would give everything i own for that one moment of happiness, to see the gratitude on those mother's faces.
